It was the message on the screen that said:
reiserfs: hda1: pap-5660 rfs_do_truncate: wrong result - 1 of search for
[31877 40717 0xffffffffffffffff DIRECT] kernel BUG at
fs/reiserfs/journal.c:2980 invalid operand: 0000[#1] setting up cmos clock
<--- This is how it hung 3 times during boot, the final time in failsafe
mode it hung when creating boot.msg --->
I began googling for info on the kernel bug & ReiserFS, which brought me to
a message on a list archive that referred to just such a bug. It was from a
SUSE tech, in fact. It was discussing the r5 hash algorithm used (the bug
reported a slightly different error than mine, but the reporting was the
same) in something or other, blah blah blah... Here's some stuff from my
boot log from Tuesday.

Things went way South about that time.
