Are we simply deailng with some API changes that Google hasn't
incorporated to their search bar?  The site does note that the latest
version of Yahoo's toolbar does work, so that seems to me to suggest
that the problem might be something of that sort.

Given that we're dealing with a limited beta release, I think that
it's too early at this point to arrive at any firm conclusions of
misdoings on Microsoft's part.
