Can someone tell me exactly what the reasoning behind giving every kid
a computer is these days.

Kids tend to damage thing, especially if it's something that are given
or loaned to them for free, and giving or loaning kids a free computer
for the school year is going to cost tax payers money. Some schools in
Canada and the US are loaning or giving kids free laptops such as
iBooks to take home, what that's created is a bunch of defenceless
targets for robbery. The kids getting these free computers are usually
within the ranges of k-12 students with a surprising number of them
being of the younger age groups.

If parents are buying their kids a computer that's different, but when
the government raises everyone's taxes so it can give every student an
expensive iBook or IBM/Toshiba laptop you have to ask yourself what is
going on here, and what was wrong with the old system of having
computers in the school library and labs. Rather than loan out
expensive computers to kids why not just get more computers in the
libraries and keep a computer lab where people can make noise open
during lunch and after school. Sure most kids want to go home after
school and *maybe* do their work there, but staying late after school
or over lunch worked for years, was a lot cheaper, and didn't mean
that mugging a kid meant at least a $500 profit.
