First, check that it's not disabled in the BIOS. To find the right 
module:

    lspcidrake -v -f

Then make sure you've got the volume set (master and PCM).

If lspcidrake comes up empty, search for the PCI ID of the card and 
"linux" or "alsa". Use "lspci -v" and "lspci -n" to help clarify the 
PCI ID if you're not sure.
