At one time I was testing several in succession, so I formatted my 
harddrive ext3, half for /home and the other half for /. I had no 
trouble at all getting SUSE, Mandrake and Debian to recognize and mount 
my /home as home, and never lost a file. Risky maybe, but good enough.
