Well, I talked with Fred who recommended a different Linksys router (with 
firewall). wanted to change anyway because I was beginning to suspect the 
router was bad. THEN the local machine worked, leaving only the one 
"downstream" on a hub. For some reason that machine was not configuring with 
DHCP  right -- I had a third machine  and put a NIC in it (Intel Pro 100). 
It worked right off. I noticed the DCHP was set up different, so I copied 
the ip numbers to this  machine and everything started working.
