Forget the pen and paper method.  That requires entirely too much
effort.  If I were to go back, I would start using smoke signals for
day to day communication.  Aside from that, if I needed to transfer
files, picutres, etcetra,, I would opt for the homing pigeon method. 
(Think pigeon carrying a DVD +- R/RW)
