I would guess it's either a firewall or nat issue (not sure for BSD, but 
you usually need to turn on IP forwarding explicitly in Linux).

Another suggestion would be for you to load up a caching name server on 
your local BSD box so all queries don't need to go out to your ISP. 
Then thud would be the primary nameserver with the others as secondary 
and terciary.
