Major Internet players like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are working
alongside human rights organizations to form the Global Network
Initiative. The group's aim is to protect rights like freedom of
expression and privacy online, addressing issues that have thrown an
unfavorable spotlight on some Web companies as they've attempted to do
business in countries ruled by repressive governments. "The first step
is always admitting you have a problem," said Daniel O'Brien of the
Electronic Frontier Foundation. "By far, the hardest issue we've had
with these companies is denial that it is happening."
