turns out, it was a matter of dueling applications, each thinking it (or 
the other -- kinda subtle and i say a plague on all their houses) was in 
control. turned 'em all off, installed wlassistant (couldn't find rutilt 
except in source, and i didn't feel like installing compilers on a machine 
already screaming in pain), and it took about 10 seconds to get everything 
right.

happy now. though i'll need to go in and turn off a lot of stuff that 
doesn't need to be running. too much swappery.
