MIME. You probably got some other option set in Mailman to strip attachments over a certain size even on moderator approved posts. Mailman is a beastie that grew so complicated in its later iterations that I wouldn't want to venture a guess. All I know is that I've never ran into any email client used by anybody, anywhere, any time that has ever had a problem understanding MIME attachments.
If you'd enable HTML posting I could send a photo email with 8 pictures of that deer in thumbnail form, and the message wouldn't be over 25 KB. When I use the photo email option it doesn't even attach or send the pictures - Live Mail merely uploads them to my Windows Live Server and the email program links to them.
Of course, HTML email would cause a fuse to blow and all the lights would go out in the Café, the sun would be eclipsed, the solar system would be sucked up by a Black Hole, and life as we know it would end.
